What is Convocation?

Convocation comes from the Latin word convocare, “to call together”. It is about our recognition of the scholarly circle of life— a cycle which concludes with the parallel bookending ceremony of commencement.

What will happen at Convocation?

Convocation at Wagner College begins the academic journey for our new students. During the ceremony, students will be greeted by the President of Wagner College, Dr. Richard Guarasci; the Vice President of Intercultural Affairs, Internationalization and Campus Life, Dr. Ruta Shah-Gordon; the Dean of Integrated Learning, Dr. Sarah Donovan and the Student Body president, Daniel Hughes.  Additionally, students will receive special remarks from Eden Tesfaye, from the Office of the Mayor of New York City; Deyja Gentile, the 2017 Recipient of the Leader on the Horizon Award and Wagner College’s very own Dr. Felicia Ruff, Chair and Professor in the Theatre and Dance Department.

With an academic procession of faculty and senior administrators, music provided by the College’s choir and words of inspiration delivered by the Rev. Martin Malzhan, Wagner College’s Chaplain, this event will formally conclude new student orientation. Following the ceremony, members of the class of 2021 will sign the matriculation log, recording their place as members of our community of scholars. The event closes with taking of the official class photo on the Sutter Oval.

What are the expectations for our students?
